「撮影中は毎日がフィエスタのようだった」

“Everyday was like a Fiesta”

　映画撮影当時19歳だった私は、始めは撮影現場の建設要員として参加しました。海岸沿いの村が米軍のヘリコプターから襲撃を受けるシーンに出てくる橋を建設したんです。その橋はすぐに爆破されてしまったのですが……。

　撮影が始まると、建設要員の中からも何人かエキストラが選ばれ、私は１カ月で２回ベトナム人兵士役として参加しました。給与は建設要員だと１週間で250ペソでしたが、エキストラ出演は１日で400ペソもらえました。エキストラは撮影ごとにランダムに選ばれるので、私は運が良かったです。フィリピン人エキストラのほかに、当時バタアンの難民キャンプにいたベトナム人も50人から100人ぐらい撮影に参加していました。

　一番印象に残っているのは、本物の爆薬を使った爆破シーンの撮影。カメラマンとして撮影を手伝ったりもしたんですが、衝撃がすごかったです。ベトナム人役のエキストラが橋の上を走って爆撃から逃げるシーンの撮影では、橋から落ちて足をけがし、マニラの病院まで運ばれた人もいました。

　現場ではフランシス・フォード・コッポラ監督や俳優のマーロン・ブランドやマーティン・シーンも実際に見ました。作中には使われなかったシーンの撮影を見ることができたのはいい思い出です。撮影期間中はフィエスタに負けないぐらい楽しくて、撮影班が帰ってしまった時は寂しかったのを覚えています。

I was 19 years old back then and a construction member of the shooting sets at first. The bridge which appeared in the scene where American soldiers attack from the helicopter was built by us. Although it was blown up in a moment right after the completion……

Some extras were selected from the construction members, including me. I played a Vietnamese soldier twice in a month. As the construction member, I got 250 pesos for the one-week labor, while I was paid 400 pesos for a day as the extra. Extras were randomly chosen by the staffs so I was the lucky one. Other than Filipino extras, there were also 50-100 Vietnamese who were from the refugee camp in Bataan.

The most unforgettable scene is the bombing scene. I helped the videographer with filming and I felt the impact of the explosion. One of the extras who acted as a Vietnamese running away from the bombing fell off the bridge and injured his leg. Afterwards, he was taken to a hospital in Manila.

I saw Francis Ford Coppola, the director, Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen in Baler. I was fortunate to witness the unused scenes filmed by those actors. Filming was very fun, even better than a fiesta, so it was sad when they all left Baler.
