自分のペースでのびのびと話しやすい１対１のプライべートレッスン
英語習得を目的とした留学先として人気のフィリピン。一般にフィリピンで語学留学といえばセブのイメージが強いのですが、もちろんマニラでも英語を学ぶことができます。今回、4月に日本から来比したばかりの大学生、松鶴れいらさんがマカティのシナノ・インターナショナル・ランゲージ・センターの授業を体験しました。
海外で英語を学ぶのは初めてという松鶴さん。今は単語を「ブツ切り」で発して日常の英会話を成立させていますが、文を駆使してフィリピンの人たちと会話ができるようになるのが目標です。また、大学で専攻している心理学の文献は英語で書かれているものが多いため、英語力の必要性を感じています。
フィリピンの語学学校ではプライべートレッスンが一般的で、今回もクレア先生との１対１のレッスンに挑戦となりました。
「私としては、グループレッスンよりもプライベートレッスンの方がいい。話す機会も多くなるので。また、オンラインよりも対面の方が好きです」
１コマ60分のレッスンの中で、スピーキング、リーディング、リスニング、ライティングがバランスよく行われます。そしてテキスト音読中には、随時先生から発音の修正が指示されます。
「クレア先生は話しやすく、私が話すのを待っていてくれて、『圧』を感じることがありません。60分はあっという間でした」
最近、通訳ガイドの試験にも興味が出てきたという松鶴さん。自分の英語の伸びしろを着実に埋めていくフィリピン・ライフの始まりです。

「れいらさんは、単語のアクセントや一般に日本人が苦手とされるＬやRの発音ができているので、文を構築するスキルを高めれば、もっと会話力が伸びます。
日本人の生徒さんの英語を学ぶ熱心さにはいつも感心させられます。アドバイスとしては、あいまいな母音、シュワサウンドにも意識して学ぶと発音やリスニングが上達すると思います。日本人の多くが得意とされている読む、書くといった技能は、英語を学ぶうえで強力な基礎となります。英語力を高め、自信をつけるには、英語を使う機会を増やすことが大切です」

Friendly Atmosphere Where I Can Speak
The Philippines is a popular destination for foreigners to study English. Ms. Reira Matsuzuru is a university student who came to the Philippines from Japan in April. She takes English classes at the Shinano International Language Centre in Makati.
This is her first time studying English abroad and her goal is to be able to converse with local Filipinos in English. She also thinks that learning English is essential because she majors in Psychology where there are many books and resources that are written in the language.
Private lessons are common at language schools in the Philippines, and she took a one-on-one lesson with Ms. Clare at Shinano.
Reira said, “For me, I prefer private lessons to group lessons because it gives me more opportunities to speak. I also prefer face-to-face classes more than online lessons.”
Speaking, reading, listening, and writing sessions are included in a 60-minute lesson. When she reads the English text, Ms. Clare gives pronunciation corrections and guidance as needed.
“Ms. Clare is approachable and attentive. I never feel ‘pressured’ during her lessons and I feel comfortable to speak. The 60 minutes go by very quickly.”
This is the beginning of her life in the Philippines, where she will steadily brush up on her English skills and achieve her goal.

Reira pronounces English words correctly, such as those with the letters L and R, which Japanese people generally have difficulty with. Her conversation skills will improve more as she learns sentence structuring skills.
I am impressed by the eagerness of Japanese students to learn English. My advice is to be aware of schwa sounds, as this can significantly improve both their pronunciation and listening skills. Many students already have strong reading and writing skills, which provide a solid foundation. To help them become more fluent and confident, it is important to give them more opportunities to use English in real conversations.
