フィリピンにいるから学びたいタガログ語
マニラに暮らす中で、英語ができればそれほど不自由を感じることはありません。しかし、「タガログ語ができれば……」と思ったことはありませんか？ 仕事では外国人と英語で話すフィリピン人スタッフですが、フィリピン人同士ではタガログ語で話すのが普通です。
４月に来比したばかりの田中希乃花（ののか）さんにとって、周りのフィリピン人が話すタガログ語は未知の言語。そこで、シナノ・インターナショナル・ランゲージ・センターでタガログ語の授業に臨みました。
「将来の進路を考えて、英語のほか、スペイン語を習得したいと思っています。タガログ語はスペイン語に似ている言葉もあり、なによりもせっかくマニラにいるならタガログ語を学びたいと思いました」
ベア先生との１対１のタガログ語レッスンは、英語を媒介語（ばいかいご）とした間接法。単語や文法が、タガログ語と英語との対比で説明されます。
「英語でほかの外国語を学ぶのがいい」。
田中さんにとって英語は小さいころから習わされてきたり、受験のためだったり、仕方なく勉強してきた外国語。一方、Kポップをきっかけに、韓国語がわかるようになりたいと思って自主的に学び、韓国語ができるようになったという経験を持ちます。
「学問の１つではなく、コミュニケーションの道具として外国語を学びたい。タガログ語は自分から学びたいと思う言語。初めてタガログ語を学びましたが、これまで耳にしていて呪文のようにわからなかった単語をわかりやすく教えてもらえました」

Learning Tagalog Broadens Your Understanding of the Philippines
While in Manila, you will not feel any inconvenience in your life if you can speak English, but have you ever wondered, “What if I could speak Tagalog?”
For Ms. Nonoka Tanaka who just came to the Philippines in April, Tagalog spoken by Filipinos around her is a completely unknown language, so she went to Shinano International Language Centre, Makati to experience a Tagalog lesson.
“For my future career, I would like to learn Spanish in addition to English. There are similarities between Tagalog and Spanish, and above all, I want to learn Tagalog because I am now in Manila.”
In the one-to-one Tagalog lesson, Ms. Bhea from Shinano teaches Tagalog vocabulary, grammar, and expressions in English.
“I prefer to learn other foreign languages in English.” In fact, for Tanaka, English is a foreign language that she has been required to learn for university entrance exams and the like. On the other hand, she has a personal experience of learning the Korean language because of her fondness for K-pop music, leading her to become fluent in Korean.
“I want to learn a foreign language as a tool for communication. I learned Tagalog for the first time, and I now understand some words I heard before but did not understand thanks to the teacher.”
If you can speak Tagalog, your life in the Philippines is guaranteed to be more enjoyable and fulfilling. Why don’t you learn English plus Tagalog and become a trilingual?

Recently, I have been teaching more Japanese students the Tagalog language. Some are requested by their company, while others take the course of their own volition to communicate with Filipino staff. Filipinos are more comfortable speaking Tagalog, and if they are foreigners who speak the language, we want to talk with them more. At Tagalog classes, English is a bridge language which makes it essential to learn. I would like to recommend learning English in advance to have a good understanding of Tagalog in class.
