自然と自分の対話の時間
異国での釣りはさらに刺激的
海外初釣果が80センチの大物
フィリピンで初めて釣りをしたのは、パンパンガ州メキシコの自然公園「レイクショア」。日の出前からトップウォーター（表層）でトーマン（東南アジアのライギョ）を狙いましたが、反応なし。そこで、歩いて移動しながら釣るランガン（Run＆Gun）に切り替えましたがこれも成果なし。日も昇ってきたので帰ろうと思い、元いた場所に戻って岸沿いにチャターベイト（ルアーの１種）を引いてくると、カツン、とはっきりとしたアタリが！ ライギョ特有のヘッドシェイク、頭を左右に振る強い引きの感触は今も忘れられません。取り込むと、80センチのトーマン。重さでルアーのフック（釣り針）は伸びきってしまっていました。日本でもライギョを釣ったことはありますが、このトーマンは自分にとって海外で初の釣果となった記念すべきトーマンです。

釣りに見る異文化体験
フィリピンで釣りをする楽しみの１つは、日本にはいない魚を狙えること。新鮮な刺激があります。そして、フィリピンと日本の釣りの違いを実感することも面白い。日本の釣りが繊細、精緻だとしたらフィリピンは大胆、豪快で細かいことは気にしない。また日本ではゲームフィッシングの対象魚であるバスやライギョは釣ったら放流するCatch & Releaseが定着していますが、フィリピンでは釣ったら食べるCatch＆Eat。私がトーマンを釣ったとき、写真を撮って放流しようとしたら、地元のおじさんに「そんな大きいの釣ったのに食べないでどうして放流するんだ!?」って言われました。実は私は日本でバスもライギョもナマズも釣って料理して食べていましたが。

自然の中で持つ自分の時間
日本であれフィリピンであれ、釣りは自然との対話だと思います。天候、水質、水温、エサなどその日の条件を考えながら釣る。そしてピタリと当てはまったら釣れる。向き合うのは人ではなく自然であり、１人で待つ。そんな自分だけの時間を持てるのがいいですね。
フィリピンではいつか海でジャイアント・トレバリー（GT、ロウニンアジ）やラプラプ、淡水ではピーコックバスを釣ってみたい。また、世界で人気のルアーをはじめとする日本の釣具、日本の釣りをフィリピンに紹介していきたいと思っています。

Get Hooked on Fishing!
An old Chinese proverb says ‘If you want to be happy in life, learn how to fish,’ and people who love fishing will definitely agree. It isn’t just a main source of livelihood for many but it has also evolved into a leisure activity enjoyed worldwide where different fishes and fishing techniques can be found in different countries. In the Philippines, you might find yourself fighting with big fish in the sea or catching exotic fish in the lakes.

Fishing is a Dialogue with Nature
My first fishing trip in the Philippines was in Lakeshore, a nature park in Mexico, Pampanga. I was targeting tomans (snakehead fish) with topwater before sunrise but there were no bites. I switched to a run-and-gun style of fishing and walked along the lake, but this too yielded no results. As the sun rose, I decided it was time to finish. I went back to my original spot, pulled a chatter bait lure along the shore, and suddenly, I finally got a bite! It was an 80 cm long toman that stretched the hook of the lure due to its weight. I had caught snakehead in Japan before but this was my first catch in the Philippines and overseas in general.
Cross-Cultural Experience
One of the pleasures of fishing in the Philippines is that you can target fish that are not found in Japan. Even for those who are used to fishing, there is a fresh new excitement. It is also interesting to find differences between Filipino and Japanese fishing. I think the Filipino style is bold and dynamic while the Japanese style is more delicate. In Japan, anglers release game fish after they catch them, but in the Philippines, it is normal to catch fish and then eat them. When I caught the toman, I took photos of it and was about to release it, but a local man asked me,”Why are you releasing such a big one?” To be honest, I also cooked and ate game fish such as bass, snakehead, catfish, etc. in Japan.
I believe that fishing, whether in Japan or the Philippines, is a dialogue with nature. I fish while thinking about rigs that match the conditions of the day, such as weather, water quality, water temperature, bait, etc. The good thing about fishing is that you have time to yourself while waiting for a bite.
Someday in the Philippines, I would like to catch giant trevally and lapu-lapu in the sea, and peacock bass in freshwater. I would also like to introduce Japanese fishing lures and tackle to fishing enthusiasts in the Philippines.
