マニラから車で約１時間

　アンゴノは、マニラ首都圏マカティ市から車で約１時間のところに位置する。首都圏からジープニーなどでも行けるが、行き帰りと、アンゴノでの移動のために車を手配して出かけたい。

巨人が行進する奇祭

　毎年11月、およそ３メートルにおよぶ張り子の巨人がパレードするヒガンテス・フェスティバルが行われる。今年は11月20日に開催された。ぜひ来年、100体以上の巨人が行進するシュールな光景を体験してみては？

フィリピンの芸術の都

　アンゴノはフィリピンのアートキャピタルと呼ばれる。その別名は、人口約13万の小さな街でありながら、画家のカルロス“ボトン”フランシスコ、作曲家のルシオ・サン・ペドロの２人のナショナル・アーティストを生んだ地であることに由来するという。また、先史時代に岩に描かれたフィリピン最古の絵「アンゴノ・ペトログリフ」（本誌15ページ）がある。さらにブランコ・ファミリー・ミュージアムをはじめとする美術館が点在し、多くの画家、ミュージシャン、映像作家などのアーティスト、クリエイターがアンゴノに拠点を置く。

月曜はダメよ

　アンゴノのアートギャラリーやカフェなどは月曜日が定休のところが多い。なるべく月曜日に訪れるのを避けるか、事前に目的地に電話で営業していることを確認してから行くようにしたい。

Basic ANGONO Information

One Hour Drive from Manila

It is about an hour drive to Angono, Rizal province from Makati. Traveling by car is recommended since it is difficult for foreigners to go to Angono by using public transport.

Giants Marching through the Town

Higantes Festival, which features a parade of the three-meter tall giant puppets, is held in Angono every November. The festival took place on Sunday, 20 November this year. Plan a trip to Angono next November to witness the surreal event of hundreds of giants marching through the town.

The Art Capital of the Philippines

Angono is called the art capital of the Philippines because it has produced two National Artists, Carlos “Botong” Francisco, a painter, and Lucio San Pedro, a music composer, despite its small population with approx. 130,000. There are also numerous art related attractions such as the oldest rock art of the country Angono Petroglyphs, art galleries and museums. A lot of artists and creators are based in Angono.

Never on Monday

Many art galleries and cafes in Angono are closed on Mondays. It is better to avoid visiting Angono on Monday or check if they are open in advance.
