Bonenkai is the end of year party, literally means ‘forget the year party’ in Japanese. The pandemic has deprived the Japanese of this seasonal celebration. Navi Manila wishes Bonenkai revive as the pandemic is alleviated this December, recommending five restaurants with good food and drinks , service, and ambiance.

　「私はアルバのＣＯＯです」。パウロさん（写真左から３人目）に役職を聞いたところ、こんな答えが返ってきた。チーフ・オペレーティング・オフィサーのことと思っていたら、「チャイルド・オブ・オーナーです」

　1952年創業のアルバは、パウロさんの父でスペイン・アビラ出身のドン・アナスタシオ・Ｂ・デ・アルバ氏が開業した。地元フィリピン人、在留邦人や観光客にもファンが多いマニラきってのスペイン料理店となった。アルバ氏はスペインの食文化を広めた功績により、スペイン王室から勲章を受けている。

　ご存知の通り、フィリピンにはスペインの影響を受けた食べ物も多い。ルーツをたどってスペインスタイルで楽しむのも、フィリピンにいる時ならではのクリスマスの過ごし方だ。

　「12月はスペインのクリスマスに欠かせない料理、スタッフド・ローストチキン、乳飲み子豚ロースト、子羊もも肉のローストがおすすめ。当店名物のパエリアと一緒にどうぞ」とパウロさん。

　「コロナ禍で営業できず大変でしたが、スタッフは１人も解雇しませんでした。店を信じてついてきてくれたスタッフたちに感謝しています。状況がよくなれば、またスパニッシュ・ビュッフェも再開したいですね」

　この12月、アルバでまずはタパスをおつまみに、サングリアで乾杯といきたい。

‘It is definitely exciting to celebrate Christmas in the Philippines, the Spanish Way. Since 1952, Señor Alba has influenced Spanish Cuisine in the Philippines and many Filipinos have celebrated Christmas through the years with Alba. We are very privileged to be part of their Christmas tradition every year. Some of the popular dishes, aside from our Paellas, Callos a la Madrilena and Lengua Sevillana, of course are Roasted Cochinillo, Pollo Relleno (Roasted Stuffed Chicken), Chicken Galantina, and Roasted Leg of Lamb. You may also celebrate the season with our Spanish Tapas and Homemade Deli, best paired with our Sangria.’

The founder Señor Alba, has been awarded by the Spanish Royal Family for promoting Spanish Cuisine in the Philippines and for being a renowned Spanish restaurant in Manila, and whose restaurants are extremely popular among Japanese expats and tourists.

’During this pandemic, we had a difficult time, just like anyone else in the world, as a company and as a family. We decided to keep all our employees and not to lay off anyone. We are blessed to have loyal employees who have stayed with us during these challenging times. We are also grateful to our loyal customers who have adjusted with us,　following government protocols. As soon as the situation permits, we would like to resume our Spanish Buffet Service .’
