フィリピンの伝説的ボクサー、ガブリエル”フラッシュ”エロルデの名を冠した「エロルデジム」。
フィリピンのボクサーやボクシングファンでその名を知らない人はいない名門ジムです。フラッシュ・エロルデの末娘であり、現在パラニャーケ市のエロルデジムを運営、そしてプロモーターやマネジャーとしても活動するククイ・エロルデさんにフィリピンのボクシング事情について聞きました。

The Legendary Elorde Boxing Gym

“Elorde Gym” was established with the name of the legendary Filipino boxer, Gabriel “Flash” Elorde. Now, it is the most well-known boxing gym in the Philippines. Navi Manila interviews Ms. Cucuy Elorde, the youngest daughter of Flash Elorde, who is a manager and promoter, about the current boxing scene in the Philippines.

なぜフィリピンではボクシングが人気？
　フィリピンが多くのボクサーを輩出している背景に、貧困から抜け出し、より良い生活を送りたいという野心があります。マニー・パッキャオがまさにいい例。「金と名誉」のどちらも手に入るという面で、彼の成功が若い世代に多大なる影響を与えていると言えるでしょう。

Why is boxing popular in the Philippines?
A reason why the Philippines has produced a lot of boxers is that boxing is a way for them to get out of poverty. Boxing gives them a chance to be wealthy and famous. Manny Pacquiao is a good specimen. His success has impacted heavily on young Filipino boxers.

フィリピン人ボクサーの特長は？
　現在、エロルデジムは20人以上のプロボクサーを抱えていますが、実はあまりこれといった「フィリピンスタイル」のボクシングはありません。選手によってそれぞれ違うのが実状です。

What is a feature of Filipino boxers?
Currently over 20 professional boxers belong to the Elorde Gym. I don’t think Filipino boxers have a common feature. Each boxer has their own fighting style.

フィリピンのボクシングの現状は？
　コロナ禍の影響を受け、ジムが閉鎖や休業に追い込まれたりもしました。トレーニングを再開しても、プロボクサーのみで、一般の人やアマチュア選手はジムで練習できないときもありました。しかし今、ようやくまたボクシング業界も活気が戻ってきています。プロモーターとしての仕事も多く、フィリピンボクシングの人気は健在だと感じます。

What do you think of the current boxing scene in the Philippines?
Due to the pandemic, some gyms were forced to be closed. After the gyms reopened, only professional boxers could train in the gyms. But now the boxing in the Philippine is getting active again. I am getting busy working as a promoter. I realize that boxing stays popular in the Philippines.

Established in 1974, Elorde Gym has produced numerous local and international champions. Many Japanese boxers have done a training camp here. There are over 10 branches and franchise gyms in Manila and Batangas. At the Elorde Sports Center in Parañaque, there is a restaurant run by Mr. Marty Elorde, serving tasty food and drinks.
