どこでもサーフィン

　フィリピンのどこにいても、近くにサーフィンスポットを見つけられることだろう。マニラからも行きやすいケソン州レアル、ルソン島北部ラウニオン、ビーチリゾートで有名なセブ、ミンダナオ地方の世界的に有名なサーフスポットであるシアルガオ、南スリガオなど。思い立ったらすぐに、サーフィンに挑戦できるのだ。

サーファーのレベルを問わない　
アウロラ州バレアのビーチ

　フィリピンのサーフィン発祥の地ともいわれるのが、ルソン地方中部東海岸のアウロラ州バレア。ハリウッド映画『地獄の黙示録』のロケ地として知られるバレアは、映画撮影後に残されたサーフボードで、地元民がサーフィンを楽しんだのが始まりとされる。今では国内外からサーファーが集う有名サーフスポットとなった。

　バレアには、どんなレベルのサーファーにも適したスポットがある。初心者～中級者向けなのがサバンビーチ。サーフショップやスクールが立ち並び、インストラクターの指導を受けることができる。一方、サバンビーチからトライシクルで約30分のセメントビーチでは、上級者でも乗りこなすことが難しいとされるチューブ（波が巻いている状態のこと）が発生する。このビーチでは大会も行われ、サーフィンに自信があるならぜひ挑戦してみたいスポットだ。

初心者の練習にいい安定した波

　バレアでは、とても親切でプロフェッショナル意識が高い地元サーファーが、インストラクターとして活躍している。筆者はこれまで日本、マレーシア、スリランカでサーフィンを体験したが、バレアのインストラクターたちは親しみやすく習いやすかった。そして、サバンビーチの波なら、初心者にもチャレンジ要素を残しつつ、安定した波乗りを体験できる。波の状況は時間帯や季節にもよるが、初心者にとっては、小さすぎず難しすぎないコンディションが断続的に続く。サバンビーチの波は、全くの初心者や初級者レベルの人にもちょうどいいという評判は本当だ。

Baler for All Surfers

　Baler, Aurora province located in the eastern part of central Luzon is a not to be missed surfing destination of the Philippines. It is known as the filming location of the Hollywood movie Apocalypse Now and it is also believed to be the birthplace of Philippine surfing. After the movie shooting, locals taught themselves how to surf with the surf boards which the movie crews left. Now, Baler is a famous surf spot where surfers from the Philippine and abroad flock.

　A trait of surf spots in Baler is that they have waves that are suitable for any level. Sabang Beach is good for beginners and intermediate surfers, who need instructions. Cement Beach located about 30 minutes away by tricycle from Sabang Beach is where surfers can challenge tube riding.

　In Baler, local surfers work as surfing instructors. From my humble surfing experience in Japan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, I think Baler’s instructors are the friendliest and nicest to learn from.
