マンガ、アニメ、ゲームなどのキャラになりきるコスプレはフィリピンでも大人気。4月30日から５月１日に行われたコスプレ・カーニバルには、コロナ禍でたまりにたまったストレス＆コスプレ熱を発散するかのように、多くのコスプレイヤーとファンが大集合。その模様を主催のコスプレ.ph代表パブロ・バイランさんに聞いた。

予想を超える来場者

　今回のコスプレ・カーニバルには、２日間で約１万人が来場しました。昨年12月にコスプレ祭りを入場者1,000人限定で開催しましたが、フルキャパシティでのコスプレイベントは２年ぶり。前売券は完売し、マニラ首都圏以外の州やセブからの参加者もあり、来場者数は私たちの予想をはるかに超えました。そして当日券の販売などを巡る混乱もあり、次のイベントに向けて課題も残りました。一方で、コロナ禍の中でイベントが行えたこと、コスプレ人気を改めて実感でき、みんながイベントを心待ちにしていたとわかってうれしかったです。

新コスプレイヤー続々

　今回は新しいコスプレイヤーや、初めてコスプレイベントに参加した人が目立ちました。コロナ禍の巣ごもりでアニメやゲームに接する時間が増えたこと、嫌なことを忘れ、現実の世界から離れたいとコスプレを始めた人が増えたのかもしれません。今は中国から既製のコスチュームをオンラインで買えるので、コスプレを始めやすくなったことも理由でしょう。

異世界へのアドベンチャー

　Cosplay.phでは年４回、コスプレイベントを開催しています。今回の「コスプレ・カーニバル」はにぎやかな祭り、７月16日・17日に行う「アニメ＆コスプレエキスポ2022」はステージパフォーマンスと音楽、フィギュアなどコレクターズアイテムをテーマにしています。10月１日・２日には「コスプレ・マニア2022」を開催します。コンサートを目玉に、世界で活躍するアニソン歌手や人気コスプレイヤー、声優をゲストに迎える最大のコスプレイベントです。年末12月28日〜30日の「コスプレまつり」は、日本がテーマ。着物、相撲、カラオケなど日本にちなんだゲームやイベント、日本の作品にインスパイアされたコスプレイヤーが集まります。それぞれのイベントに特色はありますが、「異世界へのアドベンチャー」が統一のテーマです。

The Frenzy of Cosplay is Back on the Scene

Cosplay is one of the most popular Japanese subcultures in the Philippines. At the Cosplay Carnival held on 30 April and 1 May this year, a lot of cosplayers and fans gathered. Navi Manila speaks with Mr. Pablo Bairan from Cosplay.ph, the Cosplay Carnival organizer about their enthusiasm for cosplay.

Overwhelming Turn-out

The Cosplay Carnival 2022 attracted about 10,000 visitors over the two days. It was our first full -capacity event in two years due to the pandemic although we had Cosplay Matsuri last December with the limited capacity up to 1,000. The early bird tickets were sold out and we had an overwhelming number of visitors at the Cosplay Carnival including fans from provinces such as Cebu. We had problems with selling same-day ticket and found improvements for the next events. On the other hand, I realized the popularity of cosplay and how people missed these events in the last two years.

New Cosplayers Emerge

I saw a lot of new cosplayers and first-time visitors to this cosplay event. I guess many people started to enjoy cosplay after watching anime and playing games a lot at home during the pandemic, and they wanted to escape from harsh reality. It’s easy now for beginners to start cosplay by shopping costumes online from China.

Adventure to ‘Isekai’

Cosplay.ph organizes four major cosplay events a year. Cosplay Carnival is a festival atmosphere event. Anime and Cosplay Expo 2022 (July16-17,2022) features stage performances, music and collectibles like figures. Cosplay Mania 2022(October 1-2, 2022) is our biggest event which features a concert and has guests of international Anisong artists, famous cosplayers and voice-over actors. Cosplay Matsuri 2022 (December 28-30, 2022) is a Japan themed event bringing Japanese stuff like kimono, sumo games, karaoke and Japanese inspired cosplayers.

Each event has its own character under the one main theme ‘ Adventure to Isekai another world’.
