2月14日は、ご存知バレンタインデー。フィリピンでは、２月は別名「ラブ・マンス （Love Month）」と呼ばれます。なにかとロマンティックなこの２月ナビマニラは恋愛について語ってみたいと思います。皆さんにラブ・アンド・ピースが訪れますように。

男性が女性に贈る バレンタインデー

　日本では、バレンタインデーといえば女性がチョコレートを男性に贈るのが一般的な習慣となっている。意中の人に贈る「本命チョコ」や、周りの男性にばらまく「義理チョコ」がある。

　一方、フィリピンでは男性が女性にチョコレートや花などを贈り、日本のホワイトデーのような光景が繰り広げられる。バレンタインデーが近づくと、マニラの街には赤いバラの売り子が現れる。贈るバラの本数にも意味があり、一輪だったら「あなただけを思っています」となる。ということは、１人に絞り切れないなら「あなたは私のガールフレンドのうちの１人です」ということでブーケを贈るのが無難ということ･･････？

　チョコレートの場合、フィリピンでは日本と違って手作りへのこだわりはないようで、通常、既製品を贈る。義理チョコを贈る習慣もない。もし、手作りのチョコを会社や周囲の女性に分け隔てなく贈れば、男性諸氏のイメージアップを図るチャンスである。

　なお、バレンタインデーの現象として、フィリピンでは毎年マニラ市サンタ・メサやマラテのモーテルが満室になるという。

When it comes to Valentine’s Day in Japan, it is well known as the day when women give chocolate to men, a Honmei chocolate for her special one and Giri chocolates for her colleagues and friends etc.

It is common that Japanese women give her home-made chocolate to men. But in the Philippines, men give women flowers or chocolate on Valentine’s Day. Japanese men give candy, marshmallow or white chocolate to women on White Day on 14 March in return for the Valentine’s Day chocolate they received.
