公開から40年以上を経た今でもファンを魅了してやまない『地獄の黙示録』。このベトナム戦争映画の傑作はフィリピンで撮影され、映画史上に残る有名なシーンはルソン地方中部アウロラ州バレアのビーチが舞台となった。ファンとしては行かねばならない聖地である。

A legendary Vietnam War film Apocalypse Now is a gripping epic film. It is widely known that the movie was filmed in the Philippines, and the most memorable scene was shot in Baler, Aurora province in central Luzon. It is a must visit pilgrimage destination for fans!

映画『地獄の黙示録』

　ベトナム戦争が激化する中、米国陸軍のウィラード大尉（マーティン・シーン）は、軍の命令を無視し、ジャングルで自らの王国を築くカーツ大佐(マーロン・ブランド）を暗殺する指令を受ける。任務に向かう途中、ウィラードは戦場で数々の狂気を目にし、やがてカーツと対峙するが･･････。
原題：Apocalypse Now　監督：フランシス・フォード・コッポラ
　1979年に公開され、カンヌ映画祭パルムドール、アカデミー賞撮影賞、音響賞などを受賞。2001年に『特別完全版』、2019年には『ファイナルカット』が公開された。原作はポーランド系英国人の作家ジョセフ・コンラッドの小説『Heart of Darkness』（邦題『闇の奥』岩波文庫、新潮文庫など）。 監督の妻エレノア・コッポラによる撮影の裏側を描いたドキュメンタリー映画『Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse』も高い評価を得た。

The Great War Epic Apocalypse Now

During the Vietnam War, Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is ordered to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Blando), who has gone insane and set up his own kingdom in the jungle. On his way to the mission, Willard witnesses the madness of war, and finally faces Kurtz……. Inspired by the original novel Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, Apocalypse Now was produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The film was released in 1979 and won several awards including Palme d’Or in Cannes Film Festival and the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Sound.

よみがえるシーンと名セリフ

　キルゴア中佐（ロバート・デュバル）率いる部隊が、サーフィンを楽しむのを目的にワーグナーの「ワルキューレの騎行」を大音量で響かせながら敵の拠点の村を爆撃する。『地獄の黙示録』の中で最も強烈な印象を残すこのシーンが撮影されたのは、バレアのサバンビーチ。実際に撮影が行われた場所に来てみると、生い茂るヤシの木を見るや「キルゴアが焼き払えと命じた木だ！」、また絶え間なく打ち寄せる波を見て「キルゴアが絶賛したサーフィンにもってこいの波！」といった具合に、シーンが鮮明によみがえってくる。もちろん、頭の中に響くのは「ワルキューレの騎行」である。まさにここでキルゴア中佐の名セリフ「朝のナパーム弾のにおいは格別だ」や、「チャーリー（南ベトナム解放民族戦線／ベトコンに対する俗称）はサーフィンをしない！」が発せられたと思うと、感慨深い。

　当時撮影に使われた建物はもうないが、サバンビーチには映画にちなんで名付けられたと思われるチャーリーズ・ポイントという名前のリゾートがある。

　フィリピンは『地獄の黙示録』のほかにもベトナム戦争映画の名作『プラトーン』（ルソン島マウント・マキリンなど）、『７月４日に生まれて』（南イロコス州ビガンなど）の撮影地として知られ、いろいろなハリウッド映画のロケ地となっている。映画ファンにとってフィリピンは聖地巡礼スポットの宝庫なのである。

映画の撮影クルーが残していったサーフボードで地元の人たちがサーフィンを楽しんだのが、バレアのサーフィンのはじまり。ボードレンタルと講習500ペソ（1時間）。

撮影時に橋が架けられていたアグアン川とバレア湾の合流点。取材班が訪れた日、地元の男性がミミズをエサにバガオン（和名コトヒキ）を釣っていた。 A game fisherman caught a bagaong at the estuary of the Aguan River and Baler Bay where a bridge was built when the film was shot.

One of the most striking scenes in Apocalypse Now or films of all time is when Lieutenant Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duval) and his helicopters attack the village of Viet Cong for surfing while playing “The Ride of the Valkyries” by Richard Wagner. This scene was shot on Sabang Beach in Baler. At the filming location, you see coconut tree gloves and waves in the ocean as you see in the movie. It is so moving to be where Kilgore said, “I love the smell of napalm in the morning”, and “Charlie don’t surf!”

Apart from Apocalypse Now, several Hollywood war movie masterpieces were filmed in the Philippines such as Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July etc. The Philippines is a treasure house of pilgrimage spots for movie fans.
