フィリピンには「３Ｂs」という言葉がある。フィリピン人の国際舞台での活躍に愛国心を燃やすバスケットボール、ボクシング、ビューティーコンテストの３つのことである。さらに、別の３Ｂsもあって、それがバドミントン、ボウリング、ビリヤード。国民が楽しむ人気３大スポーツを指す。もし、これらのうち世界的な名スポーツ選手を輩出しているのは何かといえば、間違いなくボクシングとビリヤードであろう。

ビリヤードとは？

　ビリヤードの発祥は諸説あり、15世紀の北欧やフランスで、クロッケーという芝生の上で行われていたゲームから進化したという説がある。球をポケットに落としていくポケット・ビリヤードは、ポケットに球が溜まることから英語でプール（Pool）と呼ばれる。フィリピンはビリヤードの強豪国として世界チャンピオンを輩出し、東南アジア競技大会でも好成績を収めている。
