島への「ゆる旅」

　フィリピンに来て間もない2016年９月、どこか島に行きたいと思い地図を見たところ、マニラ首都圏から比較的行きやすそうに見えたポリロ島へ行くことにしました。

　地図上では首都圏ケソン市から真っすぐ東に進めば着きそうですが、治安が不安とのことで、船が出るケソン州インファンタまでバスで８時間かかる大回りのルートで行きました。船が１日２便しかなく、インファンタで１泊することになったのですが、ホテルが見つかりません。迷っていると、おじさんが話しかけてきてくれて、家に泊めてくれることになりました。

　ところがいざ家に着くと「寝るところもないのに連れてきてどうするんだ！」と奥様が激怒。代わりにドミトリーを紹介してもらってその日は無事宿泊して翌朝船に乗り、２時間でポリロ島に到着しました。

　ポリロ島には、外国人はもとよりフィリピン人の観光客もいませんでした。ビーチは貸し切り状態で、美しく透き通った海も最高。島にホテルはたくさんあるようでした。島の人に紹介してもらった一番安いホテルは破格の１泊1,000ペソでしたが、少し豪華な一軒家風のホテルで、快適に過ごせました。

ホテルからトライシクルでたどり着いたビーチは貸し切り状態！親切なトライシクル運転手さんは帰りも迎えに来てくれました。「ぼったくりを疑ってごめんなさい」 The beautiful beach wash all mine! A kind driver offerd me a round trip drive. ‘I am sorry for suspecting him of overcharging me!’

　サリサリストアのおばさんに食堂はどこかを聞いたところ、「近くにはないので食べていきなさい」と家に招いてもらい、ごはんとコーンビーフを出してくれました。

　無計画の自由なゆる旅でポリロ島に２日間滞在しましたが、現地の人にいろいろと助けてもらい、とても楽しく過ごすことができました。改めてフィリピン人のやさしさ、人柄の良さに触れることができた旅行だったと思います。

Laid Back Trip to the
Heart-Warming Island

Soon after I started my new life in the Philippines in September, 2016, I traveled to the Polillo Island which looked quite easy to get to from Manila. On the map, it looks like you can get there by going straight east from Quezon City, but because of the fear of bandits, I needed to detour, taking eight  hours to get to Infanta, Quezon. There were only two boat services a day, so I stayed one night in Infanta. As I was at a loss to find no hotels around, a gentle man invited me to stay at his house. But his wife got furious when we arrived. They asked me to go to a dormitory instead. Next morning, I reached the Polillo Island safely after two-hour boat trip.

都会の喧騒から離れて思い切り羽を広げられるポリロ島。 Escape from the city, you can relax and forget all the struggles.

Since there were no foreign travelers or even Filipino visitors at that time, I could have all the extremely beautiful beach to myself. I stayed in the cheapest hotel in the area but it was like a bit luxury house.

I could not find any restaurants nearby the beach. Then, a woman who owned the sari-sari store invited me to her house for dinner. I was touched by Filipino’s heart filled hospitality with kindness.

During my stay on the Polillo Island for two days without any plans, local people helped me a lot. It was a nice relaxing travel to realize Filipinos’ heartwarming mindset.
