近隣住人と肩を並べて暮らす
喜怒哀楽に満ちたコンパウンド

　日本人の方にはあまりなじみがないかもしれませんが、私はマカティ市リトル東京を含むバランガイ、ピオデルデラール地区の「コンパウンド（Compound）」と呼ばれる複合住居で、近隣のフィリピン住人と一緒に生活しています。借家なのですが家が独立しておらず密着しているので、家を借りているというより部屋を１室借りている感じです。

　私が住むコンパウンドは、入り口のそばに母屋があり、その裏の中庭に15軒ぐらいの家が並んでいます。この地域を選んだ理由は、職場まで歩いて行けること、そしてマカティ市の中でも雑多な雰囲気があり、隣近所との接点を感じることができるからです。以前、フィリピン大学ディリマン校に留学していた時もケソン市のバランガイで「地元社会」が残るところに住んでいました。マカティ市は商業都市ということもあり、人間臭さを含めいろいろなモノがごちゃ混ぜになったハロハロで雑多な雰囲気のある場所があまりありません。ピオデルピラールにはそんな雰囲気がまだ少し残っています。

　今の家に引っ越したのは2020年12月。現在の家から徒歩数分のアパートから移りました。まわった物件は数時間で４軒ほど。決め手は家賃が手頃で部屋の雰囲気も日当たりも良く、台風の時も冠水しないということでした。ただ、トイレが共同なので、行列ができ、待たされることもしばしば。急いでいるときは不便ですね。今もいつでも引っ越しができるように、家には大きな家具などの持ち物はあまりありません。

バヤ二ハン精神を実行したら･･･

　我が家には一時、私のパートナーの親戚らがやってきて、最多７人で暮らしていたことがあります。「困った時はお互い様」のフィリピンの助け合い精神「バヤニハン」を実行していたわけですが、プライバシーもなく、真夏には扇風機だけで暑く、熱中症になるんじゃないかと思いました。あの時は水道代など出費も大変でした。今も５人で暮らしていて、そこに２匹の子犬が加わりました。３月に近所で生まれたラブラドールレトリバーのピンキー（オス）と、４月のある日、突然同居人が連れてきた小型犬のセニョリータ（メス）です。

　コンパウンドに住んでいる隣人らは、時におせっかいで、迷惑で、酒好き。以前、同居人が誤って水道管を蹴り、管が破裂してコンパウンド全体が断水になったこともあります。喜怒哀楽に満ちていて、毎日何かが起こるといっても過言でもありません。でもこうした日常が気に入っているからこそ、コンパウンドに住んでいます。

Living in Local Compound

It may not be familiar to Japanese people living in “Compound”. I live with local Pinoy residents so closely and friendly in the compound in Barangay Pio del Pilar which is near Little Tokyo in Makati. Let me explain the compound where I live. There is one large main house by the entrance, with 15 smaller houses (maybe more) built around the main house and outdoor common areas for recreational activities. It is a rented house, but it seems like I rented a room.

Why did I decide on this house? First, walking distance to the workplace and second, I was looking for the miscellaneous (Halo Halo) atmosphere which feels so close to the local community as Quezon City. I used to live in a barangay in Quezon City when I was a student at the University of the Philippines Diliman. I can feel The Halo Halo atmosphere in Brgy. Pio del Pilar in Makati even if it is in the business district.

I moved into my current house a few minutes walk from my previous apartment in Brgy. Pio del Pilar in December 2020. I have just looked around 4 properties in a few hours. Deciding factors were reasonable rental prices, a lot of sunlight and no-flooding during the typhoon season. However, I have an inconvenient communal facility… the toilets. Sometimes there is a long line. Imagine if you are in hurry…

Doing Bayanihan spirit

On one occasion, there were seven people at my house. They are the relatives of my partner. There was also No Privacy…what to do. We are the nation, we are the community, helping one another most especially in times of need without expecting anything in return – I am doing Bayanihan as much as I can. I tell you honestly, I was worried about getting heat stroke during the hot summer season because I only have a fan, no air con.

We are now five people and two puppies were added, one is a Labrador Retriever (male) “Pinky” and a mixed small dog(female) “Senorita”. Yes, there are still seven family members.

My neighbors are sometimes too noisy, too annoying, liquor lovers and too emotional. Every single day something happens. You know how much I love those daily moments. This is the reason I live in a compound.
