マニラでは見られないユニークな伝統文化やこの地の歴史に触れながら、見どころは午後からでも十分回りきることができるのもうれしい。移動中は、どこまでも続く１本道をザ・ロードトリップ。のんびりした景色と空気を楽しみながら、テンポよく回っていこう！

パラワン固有の動物を展示

Palawan Butterfly Eco Garden

　固有種パラワン・コクジャクやビントロング（クマネコ）をはじめ、ナナフシやワニの卵、サソリなどユニークな展示を楽しめる。その生態などを地元民に伝え、野生の生き物をむやみに殺さないよう啓蒙活動も行っている。ガーデンでは生命の神秘を感じる蝶の交尾シーンが見られることも。ガイドによると「フィリピンでもパラワン島にしかいない固有種が多い。もともとこの島はフィリピンの一部ではなく別の大陸から切り離されてできたのでは」とのこと。土産店では、パラウアン族の手工芸品や、世界最高級ともいわれるジャコウネコのフンから採った特産シベットコーヒーを購入できる。

原住民の暮らしを再現

Tribal Village

　バタフライ・エコ・ガーデンに隣接するトライバル・ビレッジ。4000年以上の歴史を持つとされるパラワン島の原住民「パラウアン族」の生活を再現。約200km離れた山奥に住んでいるが、数十人が数週間～数カ月単位で山から下りてきて実際にビレッジで生活している。血清がない猛毒が塗られ、大型動物も数分で死に至るという狩猟の吹き矢や火起こし、楽器演奏など、通訳を通して実演を交えながら紹介してもらえる。

儀式に欠かせない楽器演奏。曲の多くが自然にまつわるもので、楽器にはパームの木が使われる。民族の踊りは結婚式や豊作儀式の際に行う崇高で聖なるものであり、人前で披露はしないとのこと。
Music is played in rituals. Tribal dance is considered sacred so that it is not performed in public for entertainment.

パラウアン族の伝統を継承する覚悟

　クユノン族の父、ローディング・ロドリゲスが政府事業でプエルト・プリンセサに派遣された際、パラウアン族と多くの時間を過ごしていました。その中で彼らの野性的でシンプルな生活と文化に魅了され、11年の年月をかけて関係を築き、1974年に父が、2016年に２代目の私が、フィリピンの儀式「血の盟約（ブラッド・コンパクト）」により友情や兄弟愛を超えた関係を誓ったのです。

　このビレッジの目的は、地元の人々や観光客にパラウアン族を広く知ってもらうこと、そして、パラウアン族の若い世代にこの素晴らしい文化や生き方を継承すること。また、お腹が空いていては何もできないので、伝統手工芸品の販売など、より持続可能なビジネスを学ぶ機会も提供しています。

　コロナ禍でしばらくビレッジを閉鎖していましたが、パラウアン族のコミュニティーに薬や生活必需品を届けるなど、できる限りのサポートをしてきました。血の盟約は、何世代にもわたり、尊敬の念を持ってパラウアン族を守るために尽くす覚悟の証明でもあります。

A Commitment to Palaw’an Tradition

My father was Cuyunon, an indigenous tribe of Palawan and the founder of Tribal Village. He was fascinated by the primitive lifestyle of Palaw‘an tribe and lived with them in Puerto Princesa. After spending 11 years with Palaw‘an tribe community, he made a blood compact to swear a solid relationship with them in 1974 and I also did the same in 2016 as the second generation of the Tribal Village owner.

The Tribal Village strives for accomplishing our goals; showcasing Palaw‘an’s culture to local residents and tourists, handing down the tradition to young generations and providing young Palaw‘an people with the opportunities to learn sustainable business such as selling handicraft works.

While we closed the village because of the pandemic, I delivered food and medication to Palaw‘an tribe community based on the blood compact. It is my commitment to protect Palaw‘an tribe with respect for generations.
