“Goal-in-Mark” is Glico’s famous trademark, but the model is Filipino !?

おそらく日本人なら誰でも知っているであろうグリコの「ゴールインマーク」。1922年の創業時から使用されているこのマーク、考案したのはグリコの創業者、江崎利一（りいち）。神社の境内でかけっこをする子供たちが皆両手を挙げてゴールする姿を見て健康を象徴するポーズだと確信し「ゴールインマーク」を商標とし、同時に「1粒300メートル」というキャッチコピーも生み出した。
この初代の「ゴールインマーク」には特定のモデルは存在しておらず、モデルが存在するのは2代目のマーク。初代のマークはゴールインした選手の張りつめた表情が描かれたもので、若い女性に顔が怖いと敬遠されたため江崎はマークの作り直しを決意。そして、1928年ににこやかな表情に生まれ変わった2代目「ゴールインマーク」が誕生した。
江崎は2代目マークの制作に際して当時活躍していた選手の姿を参考に様々な試作を重ね、なんと4年を費やし完成させた。
現在、この時にモデルにしたとされる3選手の名前が記録に残っている。
1人はNHK大河ドラマ『いだてん〜東京オリムピック噺〜』の上半期で主人公となった、金栗四三（しぞう）。日本マラソンの父と言われ、日本人初のオリンピック代表選手。そして、2人目はパリオリンピックに出場した谷三三五（ささご）。日本人で初めて100ｍ11秒を切るなど短距離選手として活躍した。そして、最後の1人がフィリピン人選手のフォルチュナト・カタロン。カタロン選手は1917年、19歳の時に東京で開催された極東選手権大会の100ヤードと220ヤードで優勝。その後も数々の大会で優勝を収め、1923年には100ヤードで世界6位にランクされるなどフィリピンを代表するスプリンターとなった。彼はフィニッシュラインを横切るときに腕を高く上げ胸を押し出しゴールインしたという。
果たして、3選手の姿はマークのどこに表現されているのか？その答えはグリコも持ち合わせていないというが、日本人が長く親しんできたグリコの「ゴールインマーク」のモデルの一人がフィリピン人選手という事実。ぜひとも、フィリピンの人たちにももっとこのマークになじんでもらいたいと思う。ちなみにこのマークの微笑みを帯びた表情こそカタロン選手がモデルに違いないと思うのは私だけ？
Every Japanese knows Glico’s “goal-in-mark”. In the second generation mark, the names of three players who are considered to be models are put in the record.
One player is Shizo Kanakuri. He is the father of the Japan marathon and the first Japanese Olympics player. The second is Sasago Tani who participated in the Paris Olympics. For the first time in Japan, he run as a short-distance player, cutting 100m in 11 seconds. And the last one is a Filipino player Fortunato Catalon. In 1917, at the age of 19, Catalon won 100 yards and 220 yards of the Far East Championships held in Tokyo. Since then, he won numerous competitions and became a leading sprinter in the Philippines, ranked sixth in the world in the 100 yards in 1923. He raised his arms and pushed his chest when crossing the finish line.
So where is the figure of the three players represented in the mark? Glico also has no idea what the answer is. However, it is true that one Filipino player is one of Glico’s “goal-in-mark” models that the Japanese recognized this for a long time. By all means, i would like the Filipino people to be more familiar with this mark. By the way, with me, I am convinced that Catalon is the model with the smiley face in the mark?
