まず訪れたい３つの博物館。ナショナルミュージアム

　どこのミュージアムに行けばいいか迷ったら、まずはやはり国立博物館、ナショナル・ミュージアムへ。マニラ市のリサール公園とその周辺には芸術、自然史、人類学の３つのナショナルミュージアムがある。公園内に博物館が点在するのはまさに東京・上野公園のような感じ。堂々と荘厳な外観の建築は、ニューヨークやワシントンＤＣにある博物館のような雰囲気を漂わせ、写真映えも確実。ミュージアムと公園散策をセットで楽しみたい。

If you’re wondering which museum to go to, first go to the National Museum. There are three national museums in and around Rizal Park in Manila featuring fine arts, natural history, and anthropology. 30のギャラリーを擁する静謐なアート空間

　２つのナショナル・ミュージアムからは離れ、リサール公園の外にある国立美術館。

　まずは、フィリピン国旗がなびく美術館の外観を写真撮影し館内へ。入ってすぐの広々とした空間の正面に展示される巨大な絵画はフアン・ルナ（Juan Luna）作の「スポリアリウム」。1884年、スペイン・マドリードでの美術展で植民地出身の画家として初の金賞を受賞した作品であり、スペインからの独立の機運を高めたとされる。フィリピンの芸術家による作品を中心に展示するこの美術館では、歴史的にも重要な意味を持つこの作品こそハイライト。

古代ローマの剣闘士が殺された後、死体置き場へと引きずられていく場面を描いた「スポリアリウム」。高さ約4.2メートル、幅約7.7メートルの巨大な作品はスペイン内戦で損傷したが復元され、1958年にスペイン政府からフィリピンへ贈呈された。 Spoliarium by Juan Luna shows bloody bodies of Roman gladiators being dragged away from the arena after bouts. Being damaged during the Spanish Civil War, the painting was restored, and sent to the Philippines as a gift from the Spanish government inn 1958. It is so big, about 4.20 × 7.7 meters that it was broken into three pieces when it was shipped

この油絵だけで満足する方もいるかもしれないが、ぜひ館内に約30あるギャラリーをめぐっていただきたい。戦時中の日本兵による蛮行を描いた作品を展示するギャラリーもあり、その生々しい描写は衝撃的。

30 Art Galleries at One Stop Destination

When arriving at the National Museum of Fine Arts, first be sure to take a photo of the exterior of the museum building with the waving Filipino flag.

The highlight of this museum comes right after you enter the entrance. “Spoliarium” by Juan Luna, a huge painting displayed in the spacious space, won the gold medal at an art exhibition in Madrid, Spain in 1884, and is said to have had a significant impact on the Philippines’ independence from Spain.

In the museum, there are about 30 galleries featuring artworks by Filipino artists .
