戦中の惨劇を伝える記念碑

Plaza Cuartel

　海の見える広場プラザ・カルテルにひっそりとたたずむのは、第二次世界大戦中の1944年12月14日、日本軍が150人の米兵捕虜にガソリンをかけて焼殺を図った虐殺事件の追悼記念碑（写真右下）。犠牲となった米兵と、その場からの逃走に成功した11人の米兵の名前が刻まれている。ここから４キロほど離れた場所にはパラワン州特別大隊第二次世界大戦博物館もある。教科書では学べない歴史の現場へ、ぜひ足を運んでみてほしい。

塀のない刑務所？

Iwahig Prison

　広大な草原が広がるリサール通り沿いに現れるのが、一見衝撃を隠せないユニークな観光スポット、イワヒグ刑務所。「塀のない刑務所」と呼ばれ、一般公開されている。敷地は約４万5000ヘクタール。受刑者と交流ができる場所で、緊張感はあるものの興味を惹かれる。農業従事や適性に基づいた職業訓練、コミュニティー形成による受刑者の更生が目的とされる。量刑により家族と一緒に住んでいる受刑者や、社会復帰が厳しく刑期を終えても出所しない受刑者がいるというから驚く。受刑者が作った手工芸品などをお土産に購入することも可。（７月下旬現在、コロナ禍のため入場不可）

海辺に建つ市内最古の大聖堂

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

　プラザ・カルテルの向かいにそびえ立つのが、プエルト・プリンセサ最古のイマキュレート・コンセプション大聖堂。スペイン統治時代の1872年、スペイン人がこの地に到着した６日後に初めてミサが行われた場所に建てられた。第二次世界大戦中に被害を受け、1961年に現在の姿に。フィリピンでは珍しいネオ・ゴシック様式で、その真っ白で厳かな外観は海辺で異彩を放つ存在。

ベイウォークで散歩＆外食を

Baywalk

　海沿いにヤシの木、南国感あふれるベイウォーク。１日の終わり、夕方からここをのんびりと、やわらかい潮風を浴びながら散歩して、夕飯を食べてからホテルに帰るのがおすすめ。新鮮な魚介類を楽しめる店に韓国料理店、王道のフィリピン料理店まで種類は豊富にそろっている。ローカル屋台もたくさん並んでおり、観光客だけでなく地元の人たちでも賑わっている。物売りが多いので意思表示ははっきりと。貴重品の管理には注意。

Plaza Cuartel

At Plaza Cuartel, there is a monument (right) to remind of the atrocity that the Japanese soldiers burned 139 American POWs to death in WW2, which is called “Palawan Massacre”.

Iwahig Prison

This unique prison has no walls and is open to public visitors. The prisoners take vocational training and some even live with family as a part of reform programs. Handicrafts made by inmates are available at a souvenir shop. (As of late July 2022, Iwahig Prison is not open to public visitors due to the pandemic.)

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

Puerto Princesa’s oldest cathedral was built where the first mass was held in 1872, on the sixth day after the Spanish settled in the area. The magnificent white neo gothic style cathedral was destroyed during WW2 and rebuilt in 1961.

Baywalk

Baywalk is the perfect place for strolling and hanging out at the end of a hectic day. A wide variety of restaurants and food stalls attract
locals as well as tourists. Fresh and succulent seafood is a must-try !
