ビリヤードといえば、９個のボールを使い、先に「９」のボールをポケットに入れた方が勝ちとなるナインボールが国際的なトーナメントの種目にもなっていて有名です。しかし、フィリピンで一番盛んなのはおそらく15個のボールを使う15ボール ローテーション、または61（シックスティワン）と呼ばれるゲームではないでしょうか。私が一番よくプレーするのもこれです。仲間とのプレーでは15個のボールを使って、最後に「８」のボールをポケットに入れた方が勝ちというルールでやっています。

　ナインボールは私にとってはボールが少なく、簡単で物足りないんです。ビリヤードの試合に出ることはあまりありませんが、バランガイで開催されたナインボールの大会で優勝したことが２回あります。

　親戚から初めてビリヤードを習った時、キューの先を指でしっかりホールドすることと、打つ時の姿勢が大切だと言われました。そして白いボールの右側を打ち、回転をかけることも教えてもらいました。ゲーム中に考えるのは、白いボールの位置。番号の付いたボールを落とした次に白いボールをどこに転がし、止めるかを考えながら打ちます。

　バスケットボールのような「動」のスポーツに対して、ビリヤードは「静」の競技。だから、私はビリヤードをすると気持ちが落ち着くんです。

Billiards is a Quiet Sport, Play to Feel Calm

When it comes to billiards, most people think of nine balls, which is globally popular and you see the game in international competitions. But in the Philippines, 15 ball rotation a.k.a. 61 using 15 balls is probably the most popular billiards game. I usually play 15 rotation with local friends. Nine balls is too easy for me. I won the nine ball competitions held in a barangay twice.

The first time I played billiards with my cousin, I learned how to hold the cue firmly with my fingers and good posture when hitting a ball. I was advised to hit the right of the ball to spin it. In a game, I always think about the position of the white ball, where the white ball goes after hitting the colored balls.

Unlike basketball, billiards is a quiet sport so that I feel relieved and calm when I play billiards.

Born and raised in Quezon City, Franklin Andrew learned how to play billiards at the age of 11 from his cousin. He plays billiards once a week and also enjoys basketball and video games such as Tekken.

ビリヤードのキューは一般に長さ144～148cm、重さ482～624g。

「私は細身でスムーズに打つことができるマイキューを使っています。値段は約１万ペソ。以前、エフレン・“バタ”・レイズのサイン入りキューを持っていましたが、経済的な問題のため売ってしまいました」

“My cue is a bit skinny which enables me to hit a ball smoothly. It costs about 10,000 pesos. I once had a cue stick with Efren Bata’s autograph but due to financial problems my father and I sold it. ”
