My Digital Detox Trip in Tagaytay

　コロナ禍で大学の卒業旅行を泣く泣く自粛し、昨年フィリピンに来て以来、ほとんどマカティのオフィスと家の往復しかしていない。そんな私に、旅行制限が緩和された昨年11月上旬、会社から「出張取材に同行せよ」とのうれしいお達しが ！　行き先はタガイタイ。言わずと知れたマニラ首都圏からもアクセスが良く、日帰りでも気軽に行ける人気スポット。高層ビルに囲まれたマカティをようやく離れ、初めてタガイタイへ行ってきました ！

Since I came to the Philippines last May, I spent six months just going to work and coming back home. But last November when the travel restriction was eased, I finally got a chance to escape from busy Manila and visit Tagaytay!

果物、花、肉･･････
活気あふれる市場

　朝７時、マカティから車で出発するや、取材とはいえ気分はすっかり遠足。途中、ジョリビーで朝ごはんを買って車の中で食べて感じる、懐かしい旅行感！　渋滞もなく２時間ほど走りタガイタイに近付くと、バナナがたくさん吊り下げられたフルーツ市場や手作り家具の店が立ち並ぶ中、突然豪華な別荘と思しき建物が構えている。道の両側に、タガイタイの観光地としての顔とローカルな暮らしが垣間見える。初タガイタイの私は、見逃すものかと大忙しである。

　タガイタイに着くと、まずは最初の目的地、マホガニー市場へ。ひらけた屋外の売り場でまず目を引くのが、これでもかと積み上げられたブコとパイナップル！　今回は食べなかったがタガイタイのパイナップルは桁違いに甘いらしい。

　アボカド、レモンなどフルーツの苗や花もたくさん売られている。ひょっとしてこの市場で買って育てたフルーツを、またここで売っている人もいるのかも？　特産のバラココーヒーや海鮮の干物、タガイタイのロゴ入りキーホルダーなどのお土産もある。ここで、初めて「スーマン」を食べた。フィリピンのちまきといわれるらしいが、和菓子っぽい見た目に鼻に抜ける笹の香りで八ツ橋のニッキが入っているような気がした。そして、もち米をフィリピンで食べられたことに、私はちょっと感動してしまった。

　続いて奥に進むと現れたのは、豪快に吊るされた豚肉の塊！　威勢のいいお兄さんに話を聞くと、多い時は１日に５頭分も売れるのだとか。観光客だけでなく、地元の人でもにぎわっているのだ。取材しようにも英語があまり通じず少し困った顔をされてしまい、やはりタガログ語を勉強しないといけないなと思っていると、フィリピンで初対面の男性から必ず聞かれる「彼氏いる？」攻撃を食らった。NOと答えてみると、うぇ～いとはしゃぐお兄さんたち。たぶんYESと答えても同じ反応をしたと思うが、まぁ楽しそうで何より。私もつられて笑ってしまった。

Vibrant Local Market

We left Makati at 7am and it took around 2 hours to get Tagaytay city without traffic jam. We stopped at Jollibee to buy some breakfast on the way, and I was excited with this ‘typical travel feeling’ from the beginning.
Along the streets, I saw fruit shops with lots of hanging a lot of bananas and handmade furniture stores. Then, suddenly gorgeous villas appeared amidst the local market. I tried not to miss any of the views of Tagaytay’s tourist attraction and local life.

Our first destination was the Mahogany Market. Stacked pineapples and buko (coconuts) caught my eyes. Maybe some buy seedlings of lemon or avocado in this market, and sell harvested fruits here. Aside from that , there were Barako Coffee (special local product), dried-fish, and some small souvenir like Tagaytay logo key chains. I tasted ‘Suman’ for the first time. It looks like Japanese sweets. I was quite happy to have a chance to eat sticky rice in the Philippines!

Walking into further inside of the market, I saw was a hunk of Pork meat! The shop guy told me that he would sell five pigs in a day at the most. This market seemed to be popular not only with tourists but also with locals. It was difficult to communicate with shop guys in English, so I found it necessary to learn Tagalog as a journalist. Then, they asked me ‘Do you have a boyfriend?,’ which is a very typical question in the Philippines. I said ‘No,’ and I’m still unsure why they always got so excited… If I had said Yes, they would have had the same reaction but I was glad they looked happy anyway.

旅を彩る おいしいもの

　さて、タガイタイ名物といえば、牛の骨と肉を煮込んだスープ「ブラロ」である。昼食は、タール火山とタール湖を一望できるレストラン「グリーン・アッツ」（Green ATS）で、この店独自のアレンジ料理「シニガン・ナ・ブラロ」をいただいた。私にとってはスーマンに続き初めてのブラロで、まずはスープに入った大きな骨にびっくり。ホロホロの柔らかい牛肉は骨ごと圧力鍋で３～４時間煮込むのだという。スープはまさにシニガンの酸っぱい味で、取材班全員一致で「これはブラロではなく牛肉シニガン」という結論に至った。

　お土産には、もちろんタガイタイのもう一つの名物、ココナツの実がふんだんに入った焼き立てのブコパイを購入。そもそもココナツといえば私が知っているのはジュースやミルクで、実を食べることができるとは知らなかった。まったりしたココナツミルクの味からは想像できないほどさっぱりしていて、コリコリとした食感も新鮮だった。

　食べ物はもちろんだが、タイガイタイで何よりもおいしかったのは空気かもしれない。マカティでは排水のにおいや排気ガスのせいで深呼吸をする気になれない。海辺の潮風のようにはべたつかず、さわやかで涼しいタールの山と湖の風に吹かれて、ここぞとばかりに何度も深呼吸した。

What Fascinates My Taste Buds
Most in Tagaytay

When it comes to a local delicacy in Tagaytay, Bulalo is probably the most recognizable food. We had bulalo at Green ATS restaurant with the panoramic view of the Taal volcano and lake. It was my first bulalo experience.

Strictly speaking, however, it was actually not bulalo, but Green ATS restaurant’s signature dish, sinigang na bulalo. I really enjoyed melt in the mouth beef ribs in sour pungent sinigang soup. But my Filipino colleague said, ‘I call it beef sinigang, not bulalo.’
I was fascinated by bulalo and a nice and crunchy buko pie, but It was Tagaytay’s clean and crisp air that satisfied my taste buds most. I could take a deep breath in Tagaytay while I don’t want to inhale the polluted air in Makati.

ひさびさの旅を終えて
現実へと戻る帰路

　タガイタイの雄大な自然の中にいると、オフィスのクーラーから出る冷たい風では決して感じられないマイナスイオンで、体が内側から癒されていくのを感じた。旅行中は会社のパソコンがないのはもちろん、偶然にもちょうどスマートフォンのプリペイド用ロードが切れて通信できず、SＮＳからも完全に解放されていた。まさに私にとって「デジタルデトックス」な旅だったのだ。

　だが、マカティへの帰路、プリペイドのロードを入れると早速仕事の連絡が。渋滞で止まりがちな車の中で、まだ温かいお土産のブコパイを抱えながら、ゆっくりと現実に引き戻されていったのだった。

　目的地へ向かう往路のワクワク感や、帰路の旅行が終わる寂しさや心地よい疲労感。コロナ禍でしばらく抑え込んでいた「旅行欲」がこのタガイタイ旅行で刺激されたのは言うまでもない。日本にいる家族や親友をフィリピンに呼んで、気軽に旅行できる日が早く来ますように。

On My Way Back to Reality

During my visit in Tagaytay, I did not bring a laptop and I did not notice my mobile prepaid load ran out. Without any online nuisance, I could successfully digital detox during the trip! Fantastic! On my way back to Makati, I received a message from a colleague at the office as soon as I loaded my mobile. The buko pie I was carrrng was still hot, but my excitement was getting cooler and cooler as we got closer to Makati, back to real life…
My Tagaytay trip eased my itchy feet and wanderlust but also stimulated my travel craving. I wish to invite my family and friends to the Philippines and travel around the country together some time soon.
